Along the mountainside
Another long road day, but some neat stuff along the way. We left KOA#001 after eggs and coffee, making sure to choose the interstate option in order to better follow along in the Next Exit directory.
Montana is much larger than I has realized. The northern border is shared with much of SK, all of AB and a good piece of BC. Even then, the actual places to flee back to sanctuary in Canada are quite limited. Maybe that’s why the border guy (yesterday) had insisted on my removing my sunglasses.
Anyhow, MT morphed into WY along the way, and we did something untoward: took a few minutes to visit the state tourist info bureau. Along with a book and a map, a reminder. Close Encounters Of The Third Kind paid a tribute to a particular rock formation.
Early in the movie, I learned about the plasticity of mashed potatoes. Later, the Devil’s Monument figured importantly. We made the detour, and “my life has been changed”. Finally, a tourist attraction that is better than all the stuff for sale in the souvenir shop, although the rattlesnake in a glass box had me hopeful.
Enough. We continued on, via Sundance (completely unrelated to the famous film festival), Sturgis (too early for the half million motorcycles), Rapid City (it wasn’t) and the Keystone area. We are again, at rest with KOA. The variety!
Another morphing, and now we are in SD. We’ve seen the stony faces of some dead presidents from the front window, just before the slalom down the back side of the mountain. Tomorrow, we’ll explore and, perhaps, pay the parking tax. Before moving on.
