Paused for some R & R

posted in ham radio, travel |

Today, we hit “pause”. Back in Canada, with level parking and all the amenities: laundry, wifi, etc. The doctor had warned me to stay tuned to my body. Any upswing in pain, swelling, etc. would mean coming back for a replay visit, and I’m cool with that. Besides, our next destination involves faces carved on a mountainside, and that shouldn’t be altered by a day off.

And so, I put the laptop into siphon mode, updating some of my media collection, and when I felt like napping I napped. That’s how vacation time should work. None of this racing against a clock to win a prize (I checked, and there isn’t one). The air conditioner was properly exercised (noise levels above 80dB annoy, but if there is a purpose, so be it).

We could have been in Ottawa, where tornadoes touched down. Or north of 50 degrees, outrunning wildfires. Nothing like that here, although the temperature stayed around 30C all day. Summer must be good for the ice cream business around here.

I found some YouTube videos to show me how a Hamvention looks when you have the time and money. Not necessary; my want list doesn’t require slogging through a flea market for three days, comparing bits and bats.

Totally by luck, I seem to have won something on my want list, though. Thanks to a vendor in the UK, my collection of keys will finally include the Marconi product I’ve wanted for about a decade. Price? Better than the previous auctions this year, and so now I wait to see if the quality matches the photos. Always a gamble, right?
