So much goodness in one small package

While digging around in the horror drawer in our kitchen, I came across one of those mysterious devices that leave’s one scratching their head and wondering what relevant use exists for such a thing. For the curious, “it” resembles this.

Designed to endure

I’ve entered a new phase in my life. Tonight, I waited for and watched a program where they reviewed roasting pans.

Confused by new surroundings

I take great pride in “not being a creature of habit”. Even though I leave the house at the same time, five days a week, month after month. Even though I always read my morning newspaper while standing in front of the kitchen stove waiting for the coffee machine to heat (it’s not my fault that the machine is slow and the paper is a quick read). I am resolutely flexible, ready for variation, loose.

Spectator sports and little variety

Canadian autumn. That wonderful season where the grass grows slowly, the trees are in full bloom, the light is changing and every sport possible is on TV, all at the same time. Not just TV; out and about, you can find a place to spectate without any real effort. Baseball, hockey, soccer, football – I haven’t missed any, since golf isn’t exactly in the same mindspace. We’ve even got a huge tennis championship underway in the city.

New bed and new taste

My own, personal Tower of Hanoi. Today we moved beds around, and given that the house contains a few other articles of furniture, things had to be done with forethought. By the time the dust settled we had one brand new bed in place and four other adjustments as followthrough.

Unexpected meetings

What line do you cross when things move from strange coincidence to synchronicity?

Tonight we were all out on the town for a birthday supper. The usual kind of thing, where you scramble to get everyone into the car (yes, a Versa can hold five adults, comfortably, as long as all involved remain polite). Once pointed in the right direction, the city finds you, as long as the roads haven’t been closed due to (name the mysterious reason here).

Another familiar face

Cooking is full of mysteries. I’m not going to fixate on the simple ones, like why does a soda cracker get soft if left on the counter, while a piece of bread gets hard. That’s too tough. I’d prefer to solve the easier ones, along the lines of determining the cooking time for a piece of chicken.

Our cathedrals of commerce

Perhaps it was something I ate. I spent the day with this strange impulse to go and buy a guitar. Not that I know how to play one (well, OK, I can pick at it and annoy others), thus no reason to actually lay cash on a countertop. What I’d really like to do is build a guitar: cut down a tree, dry the boards in my basement, learn the craft of the luthier. Maybe even wind my own strings. The whole package, rather than a cash and carry bargain. The urge is passing, as the darkness thickens. Good thing.

A stroll in the Public Gardens

Turns out  there is a herbal remedy for when you feel too hot. Even when the thermometer is at record levels. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work for everybody (meaning men). One of the factoids I learned this morning after we tracked down a health food store using the accumulated knowledge of mankind served up by my friend Google.

A boiled dinner and some books

In the restaurant world, there’s good food and then, there’s consistently good food. Charlottetown has had it’s share of the former, but my tag for the latter goes to our favourite place for a lunch: Papa Joe’s.
