A boiled dinner and some books
In the restaurant world, there’s good food and then, there’s consistently good food. Charlottetown has had it’s share of the former, but my tag for the latter goes to our favourite place for a lunch: Papa Joe’s.
Without emulation of Mr. Gray, over at the Guardian, here’s my take on a great lunch. Nothing fancy or hard to pronounce. Back in my childhood, it would have been referred to as a boiled dinner, on their menu it comes up as the Thursday Special (corned beef and cabbage). Add some turnip, carrot and potato, sit back and enjoy the kind of plate that makes this one of my preferred choices. I’ve found equal, but it required taking the ferry from Digby to Saint John on a windy day.
My spouse had a great salad with Island greens, goat cheese and a vinaigrette prepared by their chef based on balsamic vinegar. We’ll return for this kind of food with even better service. Thanks, Joanne. The total cost for two came in at $30.
We spent time at UPEI, where the library has been slightly remodelled to allow a coffee that doesn’t involve a coin-operated dispenser. The access for a laptop equipped tourist is improving; you can request a guest code for those desperate moments on a very rainy afternoon. The campus has grown a lot over thirty years, but the Robertson Library still has that carved out of concrete atmosphere that makes it “what it is”.
Downtown, the access to used bookstores remains constant, but the Bookmark has been moving for most of this week. Get ‘er done boys, I’ve got needs.
