Cheap, ugly, delicious

In a flurry of other activity, I happened to do some comparison shopping today. Online, without the guidance of a seasoned professional. It turns out that getting from “here to there” costs almost double when comparing rail to air. Of course, there’s no need to take of my sneakers, or endure cloud watching from my window, but… Did the landportation firms not get the message? They no longer have a near monopoly on warm seats in chairs.

Returning to ready for action

When someone likes their job, and takes it to heart, we should applaud the effort. Locally, our UPS driver has the welfare of dogs in focus, and is willing to spend years (according to him) to make friends and share that bundle of biscuits with any hairy guardian encountered along the route.

Next up: the hills and hollows

Probably on the curriculum of politician school: never admit that the other team has good ideas, until you’ve had a chance to add those ideas to your playlist. And then, never admit that the ideas came from anywhere other than your own bottomless well of common sense.

Connect the deck

Where did the day go? No, literally. The onset of darkness reminds me that summer ended back last month, and that we’re on a slide toward solstice. I did go to town, twice today. We had company. I met people I knew while in the market. Life has taken on a whole new flavour.

Lobster monies from a potato platform

Now that was a sad cry for friendship… a single coyote just sounded off, two fields away. No answers. He’s stopped calling, and I guess he’ll be left trying to find an alternative way to spend a quiet evening around the lair. My attempts to record him (?) will have to wait for a more communal evening.

Lost in the mail

Decided to check on the administrative progress toward new health care documents. Turns out that the cards were issued in mid-August, and mailed to me. That’s where things sour. I didn’t receive them. The clerk on the other end took no blame for the error, and suggested I check with the local post office “to see if they were holding an envelope for me”. I pointed out that I’m one of the fortunate Canadians; all MY mail arrives in a locked Superbox cubicle. When I asked if she could mail me another copy, she pointed out that if they hadn’t made it this time, they might not on a second try.

Affirm your right to vote

In the Brave New World that this country models, take nothing for granted. Especially, not your democratic right to vote. This morning, in my effort to head off an administrative error, the family climbed in the car and drove for an hour, each way. The simplest option, if we wanted to maintain our right to vote. Someone, in an effort to avoid the near occasion of sin known as voter fraud raised the bar for identification. We wanted to be identified.

Papers, please.

“Papers, please”. Used to be something we associated with life in an occupied country, from a war movie. This time around, it’s the rallying cry for the voting class. Anyone who is newly arrived in a place had best check with the election rules before assuming their right to vote will be respected.

A surcharge for unplanned shopping

I was there, at sunrise. For the record, there’s a screen of trees between me and the “action line”, but the sky does go all pastel and impressive, so I accept that the day has two photo opportunities. Cloud cover permitting.

Vote buying among parents?

Please, let the official election campaign begin. Otherwise, the party in power will spend every last cent in the bank convincing us that only they know how to care for us. Of course! Don’t let fairness, or moral values get in the way of your bid for another round at the trough. How is it that some people don’t realize the gifts bought with their own money aren’t exactly free. Today, a small donation to eligible parents of just over three billion (taxable, to boot). Pardon me, but since when did this government invent family allowance payments?
