Linux Mint 8 is now in the house

Another new version of Linux Mint is up and running at my house. Helena (or version 8 for those who count) is a worthy upgrade to earlier interations, and the installation process is as painless as any I’ve found, even with the special needs of a laptop.

The parking game

The odd risk is good for the spirit. This morning, I decided to go into the city to buy a kilo of our favourite consumer drug (coffee), carefully ground to my exacting standards by Barista. At least, I think that was her name; when you go to the coffee store at fortnight intervals, it’s rare that you establish a first-name rapport. But back to taking a risk. In the old city, cars are not welcome, and finding a parking spot comes down to chance. I spotted a vacant meter on a side street, dropped my coin in the slot and registered no change.

Good afternoon of football

The latest twist in pandemic prevention involved a lottery. That is, you get a coupon, and then you trade the coupon in on an injection, and then you avoid tragedy. At least, that’s how the whole thing was explained on a recent cable news program. My own experience has been a little different.

Who will win the hockey lottery?

Not that I really care too much, but the fever to own a personal hockey franchise is growing among the idle rich. Right now, one of the teams that was sent to wander in the desert wants relief from its creditors, and by extension, a new mailing address. Just down the highway, the Montreal franchise is in no danger of needing a moving van, but new owners are one announcement away. Locally, even the regional television station has been showing (over and over again) a documentary about the rise and fall of the Nordiques: there is a fringe segment of the population that would love to have another team to criticize as long as they were local.

Everybody else can do your job, only better

Although I’m not a group member, I’ve certainly heard the expression “couch coach” used. After all, I live in a community where certain sports teams (and their exploits) are a part of the daily cultural noise. And, win or lose, there are a multitude that believe they could offer an improved version of the direction that all sports teams require.

The last dance, for some

For some, things end before they should. Unfortunately, disco hasn’t. The guest spots and song choices on Idol this week were painful to watch and hear. KC used to rock; now he shuffles. The bump is gone. This was also a big week for departures, with the cohort finally reduced to five. A handful, which means more than one song per week from the survivors. On the cut list, Lil and Anoop. No surprises there. From here on, the competition gets interesting, as there are only a month of idle surmising left for those of us who have nothing better to watch.

A chance to learn about obscure rules

After a six hour pre-game show (which we didn’t watch) followed by four hours of knuckle-biting action, the game has finally ended. Even if you don’t follow the action, weekend by weekend through the summer and autumn and onset of winter, football offers up a great show, with none bigger than the Super Bowl. I guess that’s why they named it that way. Actually, they didn’t, but let’s let the magic stay in place for now.
