Linux Mint 8 is now in the house
Another new version of Linux Mint is up and running at my house. Helena (or version 8 for those who count) is a worthy upgrade to earlier interations, and the installation process is as painless as any I’ve found, even with the special needs of a laptop.
There’s one bump, though. Due to the increasingly complex needs for a boot loader, Grub has been replaced with Grub2 and there is a bit of learning to do if you happen to indulge in dual boot. Simply put, the menus don’t reside in the same place. If you intend to get into designing custom menus, be prepared to read more than in past.
Among my own hints, remember to change the ownerships on the various files (as outlined here). Otherwise, you’ll find yourself with menus that continue to grow and prosper without ever adopting your personal rules. Remember that you can always reinstall, but once your new menus function, you can get busy with a greater level of customization than ever before. Of course, since you never reboot your Linux box, startup menus aren’t really important, right?
Locally, the Vanier Cup match played out at the U Laval campus this afternoon. Despite the missing Rouge et Or, good football was still on the menu. A very close, balanced match, decided only in the closing minutes of the game.
I was pleasantly surprised at the level of bilingualism shown by members of both teams (Queens and U Calgary). Coaches, players and fans all took the time to speak with the Radio-Canada camera teams in French. You wouldn’t have seen that a generation ago.
