Finally, an authoritative voice
Who was it that said “It ain’t over till it’s over”? (Yogi Berra). Well, he was right. The Grey Cup game has just ended. Somehow, I think that there is one player who wishes he had waited for that little celebration step that put him on the field with the others.
Let’s quickly recap the action in the last few seconds. Montreal is down by 2. The clock is down to 2 (seconds). A field goal attempt that is wide. The game is effectively over, until a quick headcount shows 13 players on the field for Saskatchewan. A technical foul, a chance to rekick with ten yards removed from the necessary distance. Field goal; win for Montreal. Closer than that, you don’t get too often. Final score: Montreal 28 – Saskatchewan 27.
Along the way, I was willing to offer Montreal a GPS, if it would help them to find the way to victory. After all, our family now has three GPS receivers. No sense in settling for less. Gone, the reliance on badly folded roadmaps. The original model, a Garmin Etrex Legend has been around for a couple of years. About thirteen months, we added a model with more features, the Garmin 60 CSx. Today, the car got one for dedicated use, with the purchase (on sale) of a Garmin nüvi 255W. Finally, an authoritative voice on whether the driver should turn left or right.
But why? Well, a handheld receiver is inappropriate for navigation by a driver. Just like the cellphone, any device that requires one hand and 100% attention from the person in charge of piloting 2 tons of metal along a public roadway is wrong. We made the decision to go with a model that gave the rest of the world a chance to survive. OK, a slight exaggeration, but more and more we try to navigate in areas where the street names don’t mean a thing. Time to use technology.
