History or folklore

History or folklore; it doesn’t matter much. I happened across a video of some older lads (OK, senior citizens) reminiscing about their experiences as radio ops during their war (something from the Far East, not meaning “up past Souris”). Anyhow, the stories can’t be confirmed, so I have to assume they had no reason to tell lies. For the record, the one about radios buried under the Berlin Wall seemed a bit farfetched, but no judgement, remember.

An offer declined

This evening, another round of visitors in the house. Different requirements, different conversations. All good. The dog is confused by all of the traffic, but I think he needs the practice dealing with people. Like me. Not bragging about my introverted tendencies; I accept them as mine. In passing, the dog made a run for it, and got brought back before he got too far off track.

Minimal social interaction

I’ll take it as an affirmation of my choice in a radio: one of the only sitcom programs that features a ham has just revealed their gear selection for the next season, AND WE AGREE. I mean, our budgets couldn’t be any different, but seeing the box for the new rig, and having a matching one in my basement is fun.

No antenna building today

Filled with the intention to do a little antenna construction this weekend, I printed out my shopping list and headed to my hardware store. Nothing. No PVC, no wire, nothing. Buying locally is a great idea, but only when the stocks in the shop align with the needs of the client. Guess I’ll be going to the city at the next opportunity.

Hanging some air

For the last few summers, I’ve had a dream. Small, but worth pursuing. I want A/C. Cool on demand. Whatever. Knowing that our heat pump comes “ready” added to my mental gymnastics, of course. A chance to accessorize? Go for it.

Not just any old wire will do

Over the last few days, I’ve been experimenting… with antennas that defy the rules of physics. My results have been far from stellar, and now I’m ready to return to the fold. Get busy measuring twice and cutting once, etc. That’s the easy part; deciding what model to follow is the question that needs to find an answer.

A perceived increase in value

In the news, we learn that Mad Magazine may stop publication after sixty-seven years. Ironic, really; think of all the natural content they won’t have a chance to lampoon. In fact, I’m busy checking to see if I have any access to Fox News… I want to see just how things are going in Washington. You know, what with the parade, and the fireworks and the tanks and the rain. The special ingredient, as we call it.

My novel switching method

Yesterday, I could hear an alarm. Intermittently. And so, after checking the obvious sources, I went into the stance where you listen and lean, hoping to locate the source. I did; the UPS in the upstairs office was sounding off. Unplugged everything, decided that the internal battery was at fault, pulled it out and ordered another one from the good folks at Amazon.

Wait while I retorque things

After getting my daily ration of email (too many accounts to be practical, but…), I had to connect the dots. You see, my alumni association sends me periodic blasts of information that might be important, especially if I had to ponder the bequeathment I should leave. What it really has is a synopsis of the “comings and goings”. At my age, mainly the goings.
