Did you bring your embouchure?

I like analogies. One more way of making sense of my world. I’m not going to bore you with a list of popular ones; you can do that for yourself. But when a situation can be compared, that’s my game.

Threading a needle

Almost had a wardrobe malfunction today. That’s where a button threatens to seek out new surroundings, without prior notice. In this case, I became aware of the lengthening cord between the button and me, and was able to intervene with a skill learned before I could ride a bike. After all, my time in the Scouting movement taught me enough basic tailorship to thread a needle, anchor my effort and lap until done. That’s enough to get me through the crises of existence in a world of wear.

Environmental free lunch

If you are in business, do you believe that your raw materials should be free, your environmental responsibility should rub shoulders with Zero and your rights should trump just about everyone else? Then I have a place for you; particularly if you are involved in the mining industry. Come on down to Quebec, where even the preachiest politicians will forgive your transactions.

Farewell to my old high (school)

A brief moment of retrospection. Soon, in a matter of a couple of months, my old high school will close its doors. For the youth of the area, this will lead to the excitement of new facilities, but in my case… my school days are nothing but distant memories with a supporting building. Soon to disappear into a cloud of rubble. If all goes well, and my commaodo team is prepared, I might get a brick. That’s it. The address where I spent five long years will quickly turn into something very different, and my attachment will disappear. Like my memories, probably. Age tends to blur the edges.

Shelf load of ereaders

Proof that I, too, have a sense of brand loyalty: three different, functional Kobo ereaders, side by each on the shelf. Not sure why, other than the old aphorism about “good things come in threes”.

Vicarious tragedies

Watching the news, it is clear that there are troubles in the world. Natural or man-imposed, things do come crashing down on the unsuspecting. And, because we all want to feel safe in our homes, we create a simplistic us/them mindset and move along. You know what I mean… “that’s over there and I don’t care.”  But despite the miles, sometimes you get a little poke on the arm, and a voice whispers, “You too!”

Book shows and electronic ink

I’m fighting fierce distraction to sit here and post. A Clint Eastwood marathon doesn’t come along often. Or rather, not often enough. The man has a lifetime of effort “in the can”, and it’s hard to find a title that doesn’t bear watching (over and over) again. Well, maybe that string co-starring an orange furred baboon, but everyone lets their attention stray occasionally. Clint doesn’t, often. Very focused man.

Ahead of the worklist

With a quiet afternoon, devoid of interruptions, I’m managed to put another set of assignments away. Week five of six in my online course, and I’m on top of things. It does come back, like riding a bicycle. As a plus, I can claim that my knowledge set is larger than before. There’s satisfaction, in taking on a new challenge and winning a bet with myself. Nobody else has to care; this is all about my self-perception.

Famous gull on smoke patrol

One day. That’s all it took to destroy (yet another) dream of our local emperor. He had it all worked out; the invitation to Rome, as a special guest at the  coronation of another head of state who had once worked in HIS city. And then the smoke turned white.

Planning homework (not housework)

Good thing that our office telephones ring occasionally. Not from the point of “I sure wish someone would call”,  but from the point of “Oh, someone in another cubicle is speaking.” Quiet workplace. No excitement. No shouting at one another. Not even an occasional POS (public outburst of song). Almost too professional. Almost a textbook example of boring.
