Leaving my mark

So many books, so little time. Now that I’ve got “unlimited daytime and evenings” at hand, I’m amazed by the flood of materials, particularly in the self-learning sections of bookstores. What I couldn’t/didn’t learn in school can now be absorbed from the comfort of my armchair. But what if I had to choose just one?

A long way from the county line

Spent the last couple of hours taking care of a small roast of beef. Smells good, but I’ve decided to up my game for the next time. I went on Amazon and ordered one of those seven-position roaster racks.

A lockdown tale

Almost four years ago, we went on a little getaway to Montreal. Fun. Why I bring it up, now, is that I’ve finally seen the movie that explains the news stories from that period.

Computing, in common terms

For several weeks now, a team has been tasked with laying in the new extension cord that will tie our local power system back to the grid. A special ship came over from Europe and stayed on site until just a couple of days back. Seems that winter caught up with their effort.

Name the date and the place

Already the weekend? How did that come about? When “every day is Saturday”, as we were warned in that pre-retirement seminar, such distinctions are lost in the noise. I mean, if I want to watch a movie and eat a bowl of ice cream, I don’t need to consider if the activity will infringe on my employer’s rights. All positive, from where I sit.

Requiring a minimum of chatter

Just me and the dogs here, right now. The others are all out gallivanting, as my father used to put it. I had to find something to do that required a minimum of chatter, so I opted to watch a movie.

Lest we forget

I’ve heard that “history is written by the victors”. But, what about the moments of remembrance?

This evening, on the eve of the centennial of a great battle, CBC presented an excellent documentary about one of the important battles from the Great War, detailing the efforts of Newfoundland soldiers at the battle of Beaumont-Hamel. A deeply moving recall of events that are now beyond the memory of anyone who actually participated in the living hell of that trench war.

Arrival of an artifact

Our local rail museum grew, a little, this afternoon. Although I wasn’t there to witness the delivery of the latest artifact, someone else was kind enough to share a few photos. Nothing that will get lost in a bottom of a drawer this time around.

The wonder of old aerial photos

Today seems to be taking a long time to pass by. Might be the increased daylight, or my waking early, but I’m still hours away from bedtime with the feeling that the clock is running on extended time. I did start early, with a start.

Chasing history

Trying to trace a family tree leads to a corollary interest in history, particularly local history. I’ve been busily tracing my family (and yours, probably, if we are of more than passing acquaintance) for a quarter of a century now. Along the way, I’ve accumulated a lot of tidbits about time and place.
