The government has my best interests at heart. Keep repeating the phrase, and ignore everything else. This morning, our new insurance company requested a copy of our respective driving records. Respectfully, I’ve been careful, all of my life; my transcript is a blank page. With my name on top. And there’s the catch.

Turns out that there is a peak time of day for traffic in this neighbourhood. I would not have guessed that it took place around 3:30 a.m. We were up earlier than usual, given that son #3 had found somewhere to lend a hand. On a fishing boat.

The dog noticed, first. A small plane, approaching from seaward. A steady loss of altitude, followed by a fly-by. During the whole manoeuvre, one prevailing thought: will this plane crash, forcing me to call the emergency number and summon the search and rescue team.

Part of getting older: when a simple sore toe can wake you in the middle of the night, and prevent any other dream sequences. What wouldn’t have bothered me, before, now disrupts. Or as the saying goes, “getting old is not all that much fun”.

A new address is a good reason to update the ID envelope. This morning, I received a new driver’s permit, and made the “official” request for a local health card. Both required, if I want to get full value for my tax dollar.

You can’t keep both of them! All of my friends and family have made that clear. And so, this morning, I made the big decision. From now on, my real desire gets my full attention; someone else will take care of the rest.
