This afternoon, with the thermometer edging into double-digit territory, I realized that this might be the last hurrah before winter. Not much time remaining for important tasks, such as burying about 25 meters of coaxial cable. Best to get on task. The shovel made it easy to cut a slit trench, albeit somewhat “off” from the ideal of a straight line (I blame the slight curve in the blade). Down on my knees to get my fingers dirty, pushing the wire down and under. Not something cosmetically driven, this job. More an effort to prevent the local fauna acquiring a taste for black poly.

A restless night? No big deal. You’re awake, and the doorbell will ring. And the dog will bark. And you’ll put on your welcome face and get on with the task at hand. A visit from your insurance agent? With a reduction in costs? Told you it was worth staying awake for just a bit longer.

Once you’ve defined a problem, finding the solution gets a whole lot easier. That’s how we handled our bean dilemma. You see, over the last decade, our coffee beans have been ground “in store”. After all, anyone that prepares tons of fresh roast for sale gets used to doing things right. Right?

On the binge channel, today: a retrospective of Dark Angel. With roughly fifteen years to allow selective forgetfulness on the part of the family viewers, a surprise in how well the program has held up. I’m not actually watching; the TV is one room over, but the dulcet tones of Ms Alba keep me calm, knowing that “things can only get better”.

There’s a new spectator sport for folks in the Maritimes. Keeps people watching for hours, week after week. No need to catch a ball, or anything precise; in fact, the name “Chase The Ace” explains the game. Sort of. Three weeks ago, I didn’t even know the game existed; now, like so many others, I’ve watched in breathless anticipation for the “turn of a friendly card”.

The campaign lumbers on (nothing to do with wood products or forestry workers). Today, the question of hypothetical airplanes flew, again. Pardon the pun… The promise to buy one model of aircraft was unpromised by another leader, which then saw the other two big time operators claiming that it was the wrong approach. On one side, because we have a contract, which we didn’t have, the last time this question had importance. On the other, because we need to buy something. I’m confused. Doesn’t Air Canada already have too many planes to make a profit. Can’t we privatize, and then scare any enemy with a promise to lose their baggage too… Pardon the low flying attempt at humour.

It’s odd. Seems that the people who phone here, regularly, with “an offer to adjust my credit card interest fees” don’t want to talk about anything else. I tried; after pushing 1 and waiting to get my place in the queue down from 18 to me, the agent asked what card I wanted to consider… my “weesa” or my “mastacaht”. I said neither, I just wanted to catch up on the news. He hung up. Faster than I usually do. Impolite!

Funny, the things we wish for. After a difficult winter, the summer should have been hot and filled with beach afternoons. Instead, we’ve had temperate afternoons. We haven’t even shopped for the elusive chilling tower that the HVAC guy mentioned. Right now, a slick of rain, barely enough to colour the ground, and we’re ecstatic. Maybe the grass seeds will awaken, and do their “thing”.

My early trip to the local mechanic’s place (I hesitate to say garage, because this is different from the usual place with a petroleum sign to mark the site), went well. After leaving the car and keys, I walked home (about six minutes) and waited for the call. Ninety minutes later, I returned and received a newly inspected vehicle. Ready for a year on the road.

It’s my latest thing; praise people that do their job well. Even if they don’t know about it, because they haven’t joined my subscribers. Doesn’t matter.
