Low tech countermeasures

Looking out across the fields to the water, I missed the obvious. There will be sea ice, sooner or later; I thought I had noticed some this afternoon. Meanwhile, the other coast was in view (apparently). In a straight line, just over sixty kilometers (to a convenient lighthouse). Why that might be important is that we only see the other coast at special times, like just before a storm. Have to be more observant.

Slow down!

This afternoon, the noise level is “up”. Construction, with the vibration/percussion tools, can easily make my little sound meter climb into the +85dB range. No earbleed, but no napping either. Progress comes with a number of different payment requirements. One good thing about our renos is that they shouldn’t have to be redone, at least within my lifetime. The kids: their choice.

Building a big box

The two dogs are testing the room. They’ve figured that if there’s enough noise, I’ll dig into my stash of biscuits. Buying peace. I’ve got an alternative: one is now outside where the wind blows cool, and the other doesn’t know what happens next. Keep them guessing.

A bip. Not a beep.

Part way through the night, the wind picked up and the rain showers started. Along with that, the two dogs did a “change positions” in the foot-of-the-bed ballet, and a low rumble from the passing ferry boat assured that I was no longer asleep. Time for one more noise. A bip. Not a beep, but something more pernicious.

A faint shadow of its former self

Right now, my social media stream (actually, a trickle) is watching the weather. Specifically, a winter storm warning. Here’s the catch. It might be snow, or rain, or snow and rain, with wind, or without. In fact, the only detail I can extract from the summary is that the sun probably won’t shine much for a couple of days. But, it might.

Faced with a lower ceiling

A good test of one’s ability to judge a situation is by comparison with the “take” of others. I depend on it, given my social distance from the rest of the world. Be it the crazy plan to break the hedge fund bank, or the decision to stop ordering fish sandwiches in the local sub shop (confession: I didn’t), I appreciate seeing how the late night hosts interpret things. So far, we seem to be singing from the same page in our hymnals.

The view from the other side

In my lifetime, there has been one major discovery. I’m referring to exploration, here; I can remember when the first photos came back from the other side of the moon. Looked, pretty much, like this side. That’s not important. These were photos of a place that none had ever seen.

Surfline sounds

Just over a kilometer from my kitchen window to the shore. I take great comfort (and pride) in that number, because my long term plan involves staying here. Far enough inland to be safe from rogue waves, yet close enough to hear the sound. At least, when the wind is blowing the right way.

The mutation of our slideslope

I’m too old to play outside in the snow, but I can still get a kick out of watching others do so. This afternoon, the hill in my back yard was taken under siege by some locals.

Leaving tracks in the fields

Some jobs are best handled one bit at a time. Or, in the case of an unexpected snowfall, one shovel full. This afternoon, while the dog watched from a window, I took up my shovel, and cleared the deck. Had to be done.
