Reducing predation

Trying to find a way of discouraging a local predator. Specifically, a tiny hawk that is keeping our feeder birds on edge. The jays try, but their noise is nore for their own kind. After a quick Google search, two suggestions came back: scarecrows and owl decoys. Now, my goal is to frighten a hawk, not a corvid, so the idea of a stick figure on the front lawn doesn’t look promising. As for the owl approach, I find the idea of something asking “Who?” to be scary for me. We shall see what happens.

Something on a shingle

One of my “guilty pleasures” is watching food videos.  More specifically, food from the past. War foods. OK, I am curious about items such as the C-ration and K-ration. I have no military background, nor did my family, but we’ve all learned that an army marches on its stomach. What did that mean, exactly?

A seasonal rotation

Still using this as an almanach. In simpler terms, a list of what has been done, by date. Yes, I can search for details, and I probably will. My memory isn’t as infallible as it once was.

Keeping an eye on things

One easy way to get a sense of the risks associated with city life is to read the police reports. We have one real city within easy driving distance. On their Twitter feed, today, a head’s up that two coyotes were spotted wandering along a particular road. I will keep that in mind.
Actually I do live in an area with coyotes. During the last few years, I have seen a number of coyotes. And almost no police officers. Coincideence?  If your constables have the time to send tweets about the wild animals seen while on patrol, your city is safe.

This was a polite warning

Part of my reason for trying to blog, regularly, is to provide an almanach. The seasonal moments. For example, last night we had our first snowfall of the season.

Proof that I am still valued

The combination of youth, location and interest mean that my siblings are social animals, compared with me. I rarely call back to the mothership, but when I do, someone is off, somewhere, doing something.

Your belly button is no longer required

Look up. Look down. Somewhere in the middle, you have a “belly button”. Just like a puppy, or a kitten. It used to be the center of YOUR world. Things change, and by extension, you no longer need to be the center of the world.

Virtually (impossible)

It was a proud moment, and I had to show someone else. My trusted 386, badged by PB. I was running four virtualized copies of Windows. My screen could not display all of them, at once, but I could tab easity around my instances. That’s how we referred to them.

In the presence of a rare visitor

Suddenly, the alarm sounded. Silently. Or almost silent. I’ve done the drill. Stop moving. Say nothing. In fact, even without a sighting (on my part), I knew instinctively that this was a time to be discrete, in capital letters. This is a birding house, and outside, there was something rare. I was wearing a blue shirt, and that could have been enough to frighten the visitor.
