Reducing predation

posted in Uncategorized |

Trying to find a way of discouraging a local predator. Specifically, a tiny hawk that is keeping our feeder birds on edge. The jays try, but their noise is nore for their own kind. After a quick Google search, two suggestions came back: scarecrows and owl decoys. Now, my goal is to frighten a hawk, not a corvid, so the idea of a stick figure on the front lawn doesn’t look promising. As for the owl approach, I find the idea of something asking “Who?” to be scary for me. We shall see what happens.

If we had more cash on hand, we could throw pennies. I bring that up because I am also bombarded with Black Friday ads, reminding me that I should be shopping. We actually had a discussion about ways to decrease our recurrent expenses. Food? I still have an appetite. Wearing wet clothes to reduce the costs of that dryer. Actually considered that one. I did live with an outdoor line, years ago. I remember gathering frozen shirts and carrying them back inside. More of a dryer failure than anything else. I could be convinced to don a damp tee, but damp bedsheets? Nope.

We have done  reasonable job of keeping the costs of “climate control” in the house to a minimum. Frankly, any saved pennies that weren’t thrown out the window at birds would likely be spent on things like Black Friday. No win there. I wonder if the bank would respond positively to a request for clemency. Simply forgiving any debts, to make me feel better about life. Has anyone else tried this approach? Let me know.
