In anticipation

Funny what triggers anticipation. Today, a phone call. Someone had spotted a propane tanker, crossing the Black Pond hollow. Without getting stuck, which is a good thing. Anyhow, that tanker is awaited, at my house. We’ve been running on hope and fumes for a bit, fully aware that without propane, we are one power outage from digging out the sleeping bags and cuddline with the mutt. The mutt doesn’t actually say so, but he avoids huggy humans.

The mystery of the tolls

There’s been an evolution in the world of the automobile. Socially, at least. This evening, after we had spent most of the day motoring from one city to another (and back), the instrument screen popped a new emoji. An offer to pause and go for a coffee. Which we did, although the car deferred its cuppa.

A start in the job market

My earliest real job, that I can rremember, was in journalism. The bottom of the tree. I trudged (a word that described how young boys walk) from door to door, with an oversize canvas sack containing the news of the day. That was the actual name of the newspaper, “The News”.

Winter reset

Unlike earlier times, when winter came and stayed put, we now live through resets. Right now, most of the snow is gone, and we have had enough rain that my new sound of reassurance is hearing the sump pump kick in. Generally, for about thirty-five seconds at a go. That is due to the distance between a set of switches, floaters, that respond to the water levels in a particular hole, located conveniently below grade. A visual reminder that houses around here float.

If only I could RTM

In life, we depend on being informed about how to do certain tasks. In fact, you may be told to RTM. Or RTMF in the 18=plus version. Don’t take that advice the wrong way. Admit the ongoing education is a real need.

Braver than me

Well, now, that sounds  scary: one of my siblings is on vacation in Florida. I can’t wrap my head around wanting to miss winter, particularly with a trip to places I cannot see, and a higher than secure incidence of a dangerous virus. I’ve been told not to think of it as deadly, until I am actually dead.

After a final gasp

Coming awake to the genny is OK. Coming awake because the genny  stopped unexpectedly, not so much. The sound was uncanningly like a last gasp for a breath.

New stock inbound

Although I can claim no credit, the back deck is now clear of snow. Because, as you can guess, we have bew stock inbound. The storm warning is nebulous, but it mentions the holy trinity of a real winter storm: rain, freezing rain and snow. Hard to know, beforehand, but the forecast folks mention  forty (centimeters) and ninety (kph). A mess, in colloquial terms. I will stay inside, wisely, and see what actually piles on the newly cleared deck. Enough wind, and it auto-clears. A secret known only to house who live in the Great White North.

At the ankles of genius

We live in a wonderful age. Not only do we have unlimited access to interesting music, but we can also listen to the actual musicians, as they explain the inspiration behind their efforts. Only a generation ago, you would have had to find a place by the virtual hearth, and ask pointed questions.

With a nod to teh old ways

I have an admission to make. Not of guilt, exactly. More of commission. You see, we don’t respect the calendar. At least, not in a way that my grandparents might have done.
