Too late for the border guards

There was no reason to stay any longer. We had decided to avoid darkness and blowing snow; now we were ready to head back to base. The drive out of the city was uneventful, and after stopping for fuel, we headed north. Decided not to see if the ferry was still in service (it wasn’t), and our papers granting safe passage across provincial borders expected up to come back the way we had gone. I mean, we had a medical exemption, which conveyed great pomp and circumstance. Or not.

Pulled back the flap on the medical tent

Today, I girded my loins and opened the flap in the medical tent. Sort of. There was a taxi waiting at the front door of the hotel, at the requested time. As it turned out, neither the driver nor the passengers knew where we were going, but many actions require faith. We did get to the correct hospital, on the second try.

The ramparts were over run, sir

In wartime, the news we broadcast to the general population is very important. It doesn’t have to be factual, but it seves to maintain good spirits. Enough said.

A thousand dissenting voices

Too much time on my hands; not enough time. Both equally confounding.  I’m in a holding pattern, waiting to depart for a surgical roadtrip. I know the destination, the dates, the procedure (that’s actually untrue). I don’t know what they have in mind. It doesn’t matter. I’m just another number. A stranger that will come and go, and the surgical team will be tasked with trying to improve my life. Can’t wait.

As seen from the actuarial angle

Later in life, we recall odd things. Like, from high school, the bi-weekly visits from the “guidance counsellors. He, in a gray suit, and she, in a beige blouse. They may have had names, but that wasn’t of lasting importance. The came equipped with the tools of their trade: mimeographed handouts on the various professions we might wish to follow, once finished with our basic educations.

Remember the tolls

It might be “the holiday”, but we have other things on our minds. In just under a week, we’re going on an expedition. Three provinces, seeking precise medical assistance. Important stuff, requiring important plans.

nobody dead (yet)

Expectations have changed. Yes, the calendar promises that the Bringer of gifts is coming, but, I suspect that’s only for the children. The rest of us, not so much. Around here, each time that I talk to family on the telephone, a voice in the background adds an andertone: “Nobody is in the hospital. Nobody has died. And my unvoiced echo goes. Not that we know of. Not yet. My own hope is to make it through December, because it ain’t over just yet.
