Put away your Sharpie, please

posted in technology |

May I suggest that there be a lesson session (in electrician college) devoted to proper labels. In the breaker panel, at least. Put away your trusty Sharpie. Don’t scribble. Match the label to the circuit (otherwise the exercise is futile).

Today was a great day for installing those two nifty dimmer switches I’d purchased. No stress. The colours matched the decor (I had grave doubts, in the store). And, I’ve been taught to work safely. Hence, job #2 was to turn off the juice in my work area. Job #1, for the curious; get the right screwdriver ahead of time.

Took me a long time to match the breaker to the light fixture. In some future time, I might even relabel things, with printed media, but for now I worked by alternating my position upstairs (the fixture) and downstairs (the breaker panel) until darkness prevailed. Safety.

We have put LED bulbs through most of the house, so I also had to read the fine print stamped on the actual bulb (silvery hazy over beige is stealth mode). The installation was simple, as light switches haven’t evolved much in my lifetime. And, in the end, dimmed lighting is now available in both bedrooms. Not a priority in life, but when I can, I do.

My other project (a light switch with a pilot lamp) is on hold. The breakers that were supposed to be off for my job left current in the circuit. I tested with a VOM, rather than my cardio system. Some other day, I’ll follow up on the job; not a priority.
