The bridge to everywhere else
Residence space (on campus) just became a little tougher to score. Certain schools are restricting the number of spaces available, due to the pandemic. That’s a big deal.
When I arrived in the place I would live for the next five years, life on campus was worth every penny. Social life! Meals! No control on the room heat! And we were all welcomed with open arms. Fast forward to a world where the number of res-rooms lags behind the enrollment numbers. Although the rates seem outrageous, there has been a happy equilibrium between supply and demand. That just changed.
If you have just received word that “the inn is full”, you’ll be left scrabbling for apartment space which is also limited and expensive. So much for going to school, and not having to stress about the simple things.
The bridge to everywhere else (it’s a local image) has shut down their shuttle service for pedestrians and cyclists. There are, literally, people who have come to the Island and now can’t leave. Having trouble understanding how that decision was made by rational adults. An optimist will figure that this will evolve into an even better system, but for now expect to extend your stay, if you arrived in the saddle.
It’s taken decades, but other provinces have clued into the wonderful system, for daycare, available to residents of QC. Imagine a world where tax dollars go to serving the citizens, instead of the petroleum industry. I’m hoping this evolves into something nationwide. We should put piecemeal into the memory bin and go for something better.
