Dipped my toe into some musical puddles

posted in music |

This afternoon, I followed a number of musical threads. First of all, for those on compressed budgets, let’s consider compressed instruments.

The pocket trumpet is something that I check out on Amazon, hoping for a serious drop in price. To be fair, the cost to a player on a fixed budget is already quite reasonable. One video compared a cheaper pocket trumpet to the Bach, with a 1:10 price ratio. Yes, there’s a difference. No, not big enough for my to decide that I would never deign to purchase one (of the less expensive model). I just haven’t, yet.

Next, a series of videos that showcase musical illusions. Like in the optical world, they exist. The carefully chosen excerpts dealt with rising frequencies (that don’t actually), progressively faster rhythms (that aren’t) and tonal distribution, where the notes in familiar pieces are spread across several octaves. In all cases, great fun, although of little practical use. I mean, we already have first year concert bands to showcase such things.

Finally, what if you move a melody to an non-traditional instrument? I particularly like what can be done with a mallet instrument (for example, the xylophone). Confession: I would love to be gifted with a marimba.

This was a “toe in the pool” sort of sample. I imagine that the more I search, the more I’ll hear. Another day. Right now, I’m ready to see if I can discover something different. Too much American politics and pandemic information out there. I need to get a better hobby. Until the delivery of  a marimba.
