Let it go

posted in politics, sports |

Finally! A game worth waiting for. You might know that I have a soft spot for Canadian university football, spawned by too many afternoons field-side, with my eye glued to the viewfinder of an SLR. Those times are gone, but when I can catch a game on TV, all is good.

Particularly this afternoon. Vanier Cup action, from Quebec City. On a field that I passed, day after day, on city transit. Good outdoor action; today the weather  cooperated, and more than 12,000 spectators stood shoulder to shoulder as ULaval beat out the Western U team for the trophy and fireworks. No big score spread (34-20). Hardly a blowout; rather a reflection of two great teams slogging it out for the full game, with the winner known at the end of the day. I was there, in spirit.

Tomorrow, pro ball; I don’t have the same familiarity with the game or the teams, but unless something else intervenes, I’ll be in my place on the couch, awaiting the final whistle.

Right now, the dog is making lazy circuits in the snow. I wonder what he thinks about, as he traverses the treeline.

Isn’t there some line, from Churchill, about how the sun never sets on a certain empire? (Actually attributed to Christopher North; but he has no name recognition, so I stuck the quote on a famous guy).Let it go. Right now, the Brexit discussions are spinning their wheels over Gibraltar (population 35,000 people and way too many monkeys). The UK can’t afford any more drama, as they tear their economic fabric asunder in a play to have “their own money and passports”. Which they had, apparently, but with a population that lacks off-island experience that was missed. Anyhow, Gibraltar.
