The show of shows
At some point, it was decided that there would be an unofficial national holiday. The purpose, to distract the people of the world with a really big show, and sell lots of high calorie foods and simply take a break from winter (in the Northern hemisphere, but the south could join in, quietly). And for those who pretend to watch sports, but only once a year, there would be a football game, because… well, because.
