Scratch and lose

Finally, a reason to learn more math. According to this month’s issue of Wired, a Toronto-based statistician has figured out the mystery of the scratch-and-lose ticket. With enough time, he could have turned this into a paying gig. It seemed like a sure thing,  until he went the extra few lines in his proof, and realized that his regular job paid better than spending and scratching.
