Scratch and lose

posted in economy |

Finally, a reason to learn more math. According to this month’s issue of Wired, a Toronto-based statistician has figured out the mystery of the scratch-and-lose ticket. With enough time, he could have turned this into a paying gig. It seemed like a sure thing,  until he went the extra few lines in his proof, and realized that his regular job paid better than spending and scratching.

I’ll leave it to you to read the article. Just remember, the next time you are stuck in line at the gas bar, behind some person trying to figure out if the Instant Millionaire cap will fit; this is not a pension plan. Now, pass that tidbit on to your elderly acquaintences who still believe.

In today’s news; Egypt is in for a change of government. Finally. Now if we could get a similar boon.

I have to make a decision. The family wants me to move the cable TV decoder box from the upstairs to the downstairs. Bigger TV requires bigger list of channels. My reticence comes from a dislike of concentrations of services. Currently, we use the living room TV to watch TV, screen movies, check the weather, play war, listen to mediocre talent on the music channels, etc. I figure that adding a few more channels is just going to be lost in the fog of war. At least, when the various game consoles are the centre of attention, I can retreat to a closed room and listen to Galaxie. If the box moves downstairs, even that respite for my sanity will be gone.
