Trying to estimate travel times, despite the best gadgets and data from Google, saw us doing that proverbial last mile in the dark. It doesn’t help that a mile is now a foreign concept.

As we continue along this never-ending highway, the differences between campgrounds are pronounced. KOA has meant bounty: good water and elecricity, hot showers, even wi-fi with limits. Taking aim at their competition, none of the above are assured. In fact, one site wanted a fee just to be parked in their overflow area, forget the amenities.

Over fresh coffee in the campground office, we realized that this would be a good base for local exploration. As those around us packed and headed home, we paid for a second evening, at a discount. And then, off to see what the area had to amaze.

Our first attempt at boondocking went without woe. We didn’t bother with the “raise shields” routine; the fog from three sentient beings blocked the view from the outside. Actually, by morning there were a number of other campers in the parking lot, which provided added anonymity. No visit from the local constabulary.

Reminiscing, with a classmate from high school. I avoid the usual modifier (“old”) because neither of us is. Therein the wonder of parallel experiences. We shared the same classes and teachers, and that gives us a leg up in the recall game.

We ran out of hills. Took days, but finally the road went flat, and we found ourselves near water. Rush hour on a Friday afternoon is not optimal timing, but we carried on, Ahead, a convenient ferry terminal, as an added attraction, so we did the natural thing. We sailed away.

I don’t understand this whole concept of a mountain range. Yesterday, we drove for hours in a north-south direction. Lots of ups and downs. Today, we drove for hours in an east-west direction. Lots more ups and downs. How big is this thing? Don’t answer, because I know its the Rockies. Blame me, a noob.

A very different day, in terms of “the view from my window”. We headed west from the Edmonton area, intending to drive until it was time to stop.outside, rural ordinary, until around mid-morning, on the horizon. Unlike the usual clouds.
