Ups and downs and lots of leaves
I don’t understand this whole concept of a mountain range. Yesterday, we drove for hours in a north-south direction. Lots of ups and downs. Today, we drove for hours in an east-west direction. Lots more ups and downs. How big is this thing? Don’t answer, because I know its the Rockies. Blame me, a noob.
Our big tourism moment involved trains, again. This time we spent the afternoon in Cranbrook, where their extensive collection of historic passenger cars required two guides and a fire drill to get us from start to finish. I had some great moments of recollection, because in Canada we used the same style of wagons for a very long time. The colours, the odours, even the W.C. with the stubby-sized egress brought me back almost fifty years. The CP lineage was unfamiliar, a little, but Via was built on the shoulders of its corporate parents.
Our campground came with an extra “detail”; a rampart of sand bags, left over from a substantial flood this time last year. I saw a quiet river, with a ten meter bank. During the runoff in 2018, the waters went a full five meters higher again.
Right now the snow pack “uphill” is much less, but when the rains start, we’ll be back on the highway, climbing to tranquility.
I also have to mention the micro climate around Creston. They are weeks ahead of home – the dandelions have gone to seed, the lilacs are in bloom and everything is lush and leafy. Lots of orchards.
