Empty those shelves

The one, critical difference between our local market and a supermarket in the city isn’t the variety. It’s the quantity on sale. We have a some extra people here, for the next few days. I managed to empty the shelves of certain articles, without making an effort. No stockpiling, just getting enough stuff to feed those around the table. I could have gone to a larger place, but the three hours of road time is a powerful deterrent.

Keeping after the fish

As the days go by, the obvious menu for summer on PEI involves fish. Fresh, frozen; that part is important to the kitchen staff. On my plate, what matters is the texture. Oh, and the tartar sauce.

An obvious air freshener choice

Everything in its own context: I was asked, concerning the jazz singer Emily-Claire Barlow, “but who is she?” Easy answer: her grandfather was the Friendly Giant. In Canada, that’s all the identification you need, when talking to people from my generation.

First fruit

The sun is setting, and the wind has died. I’m here, filled with anticipation. Will we get some thunder and lightning, or not? The western and central sections of the Island have had theirs…

Comfort food outside my comfort zone

A change in routine around the house, today. The other half went to work, sort of… I didn’t even know that you could do supply teaching in a daycare in the middle of the summer, but that’s how it goes. I had nothing more challenging to take care than watering the garden and preparing a lonely steak on the BBQ. Cooked well, with the dog in his ” your best friend forever” role. I didn’t spoil him, but I didn’t disappoint him either.

Improved technique

With the new BBQ comes the challenge: to improve my skills. I can’t blame poor technique on crappy equipment forever. The last char-box on our deck was a point of avoidance, for me. Anything other than the simplest thing (a hamburger, for example) seems to turn out tough. Hard. And so, I found no reason to refill the tank, when one (or two) of the kids left it empty.

Finding a place at the table

I have great intentions for that new cooking machine of mine. Took the time to read up, and looked at the accessories, of course. But before anything else, a BBQ requires a minimum of tools… tongs, giant fork, spatula and a brush to remove what my efforts have left behind. The charcoal effect.

Off to feast

Our second time around; at the Village Feast, I mean. This year, I planned ahead, for the dog. A leash, a waterbowl, a place away from passersby. I think he was happy with all that.

Fed by others

That moment, when I’m having breakfast and I’m reminded that we are going out to a restaurant for breakfast…  Of course I was able to handle the situation. After all, no restaurant ever serves me food “immediately”, unless I count the fast food places in the city.  What with a half-hour between, I’ll be (and was) good to go.

Getting the beds started

Early this morning, I decided to check back on the calendar. I wanted to know when we had placed an order, locally, for a small delivery of gravel. Seemed like just last week, but it was actually eight weeks past. We had met with the contractor, taken measurements, received an estimate, called back to confirm, stopped by to give particulars on gravel colour. And in the end (today), nothing. The time has come to move forward, with plan B.
