Midterm report card

Another school evening for the youngest family member. She has been enrolled in BI since the end of September, and when I jokingly remarked that we should be attending graduation ceremonies before much longer, I was assured by her mentors that, indeed, our convocation was not far away. Wow, another diploma to (not) hang on the wall. Good work, little one.

Trained not to be a pet

Is there anything more comforting than a wet nose stuck in your face as you bounce out of a dream? The enthusiastic wet nose of a dog who has finally discovered where you’ve been hiding for what must seem like a lifetime in the time-confused brain of the canine. I for one welcome my toothy overlord. That’s why we choose to live with a dog, for those moments that others find yucky and that we accept as signs of true love.

The rain makes me crazy

This was a confused day at our house. Son #2 was off to climb a mountain, in the fog and rain, without his coat which had been left at a friend’s house. Travel on a Sunday gets people out of bed.

Stealth mode

New puppies are just so cute. We welcome them into our homes, in spite of the whining and chewing and “marking of territory” (otherwise known as wetting where they please). We cajole and give treats and sit with our cute puppies thinking that this is true bliss. No wonder dogs adopted humans; we are easily trained and SO gullible.

Hey, don’t eat THAT!

While removing yet another article from the dog’s jaws, I had one of those lateral thoughts, about taboo foods. You know, like why I shouldn’t just eat the dog and save a whole variety of household articles from an early demise. She’s safe, for now…

Ode to joy

Our various languages have developed an array of adjectives that can describe sentiments. We all use them, and if you hear or read the phrase that describes a particular one, such as sorrow or joy or whatever, you “get the idea”.

Runs like the wind

Based on less than scientific evidence – on a very small sample, in fact, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that all dogs run faster than me. Today the sofa shark got “loose” on no less than three occasions, and used all of them to mock the rest of us. Look at me… I can go anywhere I want. See the neighbour; up close and personal. Sprint. Corner on a dime. Straight between your legs and his outstretched arms. Ignore the nice voice. Ignore the cookies. Ignore the pig’s ear (pig not included). In fact, on one of the three freedom frolics, it was the diversion of digging a new hole under the cedar tree and then being faked out by a doggie biscuit thrown into said hole that led to a capture.

Looking before leaping

Our parents are responsible for important character-building with the young and restless. As a parent, I have the same role, I guess. Anyhow, we spend a lot of time warning the young of the perilous lives we lead, and impress on their malleable minds that we should always “Look before we leap”.

Going the distance

Part of my training the new dog is to get out and be led around on a leash every day. I have chosen the timeframe and the speed varies little from session to session, so today we headed off in a different direction. I mean, one house resembles another in this part of the city, but there’s a break in the “there goes the dog with its person” comments from the neighbours. As well, the GPS gets a chance to exercise too; how else would I know how far the dog took me?

Test drive

Today was my first chance to “test drive” the new puppy, with a walk around the block. Ten minutes of exercise. For me. She was like a very curious fish, fighting the line while trying to see and walk in all directions at once.
