The entertainment of the games

As I search the cupboards for the equivalent of a tea strainer, I’m reminded that “if I can’t be handsome, at least be handy”. Seriously.

Bang, bang, all fall down

The local skyline looked different. Emptier. Buildings that have lived in the shadow of an old church for over eighty years were revealed to those who enter the city from the east this morning, after a busy weekend involving a good old wrecking ball. I wish I’d been there to watch, but some things just don’t get much advance notice.

And around they go, except in the presence of potholes

Perhaps the commentators on our Olympic channel are taking the Canadian thing too seriously. After an upsetting win by the Women’s Hockey team over Slovakia, the idea was floated that perhaps there should be a “mercy rule.”

Let the Games begin, if they must

Three little words: Citius, Altius, Fortius

For public purposes, an invitation to play nicely with others. In private, an admonition that only superlatives matter. Once again, the Games are upon us. Seventeen days; enough time for spring to fully arrive on the Left Coast. I’m watching the Opening Ceremony. Have been for hours. It takes a long time to welcome all the neighbours over for a play date.

The last rock rocked the house

More’s the pity; the final stone was too well thrown. It’s been hours since the final of this year’s Scotties got underway, and at the end of eleven ends, Jennifer Jones did what she does. She won. The team from PEI can go home with their heads high, because there was nothing one-sided about the match.

In real life, there are no miracle rocks

Funny how the idea of what makes for interesting content in a sporting match depends on your emotional attachment to a team. Here we are, on the eve of yet another Superbowl, but in our house the important stuff is going on “in the house”. That’s right, we’ve curling junkies, at least until the end of the Scotties.

Too little, too late

More than seven hours have gone by since the start of the afternoon’s diversion. Too bad the other fellas let the “old fella” down.

Skip the applause and pledge

It takes a few days to get the gang ready, but the music industry was out in force and voice this evening for a huge telethon. Haiti needs and we have; what could be simpler?

Dangerously cold activity

I was going to write about how enough dead bees will make a grown man cry; unfortunately, they will. Learned that this evening while watching the Nature of Things. Just one more factoid in a vast, changing world. Thank you, Dr. Suzuki.

A close encounter

Sometimes you end up in the right place at the right time. Without expectation, I caught my usual bus towards the university campus, watching the clock to assure a timely transfer. When the first police car went by, I thought nothing of it. Big city. The second slowed as it passed, and the third simply stopped at the next corner.
