Fledging the nest

The link between a parent and a child (their own child, you understand) is strong, forged from the best virtual steel that nature can provide. Yet, the parent must convince the child (approaching maturity) to check out other living arrangements. It’s true!

Hunters and gatherers all

Friday before the week of the “big day”. Or maybe the week before the week of the “big day”. Depends on where you live. Locally, the anticipation is thick enough to cut with a butter knife. The end of summer is nigh; school must follow.

We all move slowly

Try to imagine a scene where threescore and plus of us, all of a certain age, dressed in our working uniform (polo shirts and baggy jeans or shorts) are sitting in rows. Before us, 119 PowerPoint slides, a dozen video captures of a server screen and enough acronyms to fill a bowl of alphaghetti.

Find a job in a land of plentiful opportunity

We had a real sitdown family meal this afternoon. Not at home; the opening of a new restaurant within jogging distance was good enough reason to get out and try some other kitchen’s fare. And no, we didn’t jog there either.

The education of a fixer-upper

Not to argue with the experts; you can learn by watching those who have mastered the craft. However, after watching a certain number of episodes of “Canada’s Worst Handyman“, there are alternative paths to excellence.

Reviewing the chariot races

I’m not alone in seeking movies with an Easter (sort of) theme. There’s nothing else on TV today. And, given the beautiful weather we’re having, I’ve done the exact opposite of those suffering from spring fever; I’ve stayed inside and allowed the magic of cinema to keep me entranced.

What kind of saw did I see?

The self-directed learner doesn’t require much in the way of stimulus. Throw out a question, leave some reference materials within range and step back. Too bad we couldn’t bottle it and provide the school system with a reliable source.

Get their captive attention, as early as possible

How many Canadian youth realize that lotteries used to be illegal? Back in the Sixties (when the British Invasion ruled in rock), there was a secretive activity known as the Irish Sweepstakes. I saw a ticket, once; this was a mysterious affair where buying a ticket from somebody could make you very rich. I never actually heard of anyone winning, which made the activity seem sort of senseless, but people need a dream.

Scratch one tall ship from your list

Several summers ago, as I stood on a pier in Cape Breton, I felt a twinge of envy. Before us, a great masted ship, serving as a school. I would have loved to have been part of such a special classroom. Last summer, in Lunenburg, the same ship and the same sense of “I wish I had done that”. Today, another chapter in their story, and this time I’m glad to have missed the session.

Singing in committee

Some things just don’t fit. Decisions made by committee. Ballroom dancing in a trio. American Idol in a group. Tonight, like each preceding year, showed just how painful trying to fit individual (large) egos into a happy, harmonious amalgam can be for all involved.
