The lateral cost of cooled air

Today’s lesson involves the cost of cool air. Noise. Ever wonder why the AC units on camping trailers are roof-mounted? It’s to allow the neighbours to hear when you’re being spoiled. Inside the rig, the fan covers up the vibration from above. Across the way (yes, even inside the house) I can tell that the outside is less comfortable than in.

Just mesh the subsystems

Happened across a quote from a user forum this afternoon, that describes the reality of owning technology to replace basic gear. “Anyone owning a boat or RV has to be a trouble-shooter; there will inevitably be troubles”. Compared to a dugout canoe, or a lean-to shelter of fortune, this is truth. The larger the number of subsystems, the greater the chance of two things interacting in unexpected ways.

Getting the job done (by others)

Not to brag, but I respond well to the “to do” list of tasking. Had to use it in my working life; still do at home. Helps to motivate me. I can imagine if my income depended on getting through the accumulated lines of my calendar, I’d do OK.

Clean water and power

Along with our decision to go “glamping”, we are busily augmenting the supplies, in a technical sense. With a nylon tent, the ability to accessorize is limited. No sense putting hard walls on a soft wall shelter. With our new mobile land yacht (that’s from my point of view, OK?) there are so many more possibilities.

Repair at the lowest price point

Today, I had a list of little jobs to accomplish. I took the route that made me feel as if I had done some things that were (more) important. Turned the banal into something better.

Mastering the technology by shopping

Hours of fun for the whole family: trying to get the necessary purchases for a project completed, using the endless bounty of Amazon. Even though we can’t touch the stuff, beforehand, it seems so familiar as a process. Wait; didn’t we used to shop at Eatons and Sears, with nothing more than a seasonal wishbook? And hasn’t Canadian Tire kept me in awe of the variety of gadgets out there, for a lifetime. Carry on.

Taking baby steps

I have adopted a technique of “take baby steps” around here. Too many new things to learn, and since we have little idea what may come from pushing any given button, we’re in educational overdrive. This afternoon, I learned how to play a DVD on one of two screens.

A sackful of remote controls

When life hands you a bag of lemons, there is a solution (Google it, if you don’t really know). However, what do you do when life hands you a bag of remote control units for media devices, and doesn’t identify the affiliates? I don’t know. Neither does Google.

What about the batteries?

In a world where batteries are not included, you work around the problem. Careful shopping at the local dollar store and you’re good for the next few hours of activity with your gadget. Perhaps not flashlights… very few batteries on the cheap side of the aisle are up to spotting raccoons or foxes in the dark. For that, I have a big old Maglite. Anyhow.

A belief in the power of fire

Four years ago, a magazine mentioned what seemed like a novel idea. Imagine a small campstove that could also recharge your smartphone. Twice the practicality, given that you could heat up water for a cup of coffee before getting down to business at your campsite. I know, the two should be mutually exclusive, but it was the idea of the gadget.
