A sackful of remote controls

posted in technology |

When life hands you a bag of lemons, there is a solution (Google it, if you don’t really know). However, what do you do when life hands you a bag of remote control units for media devices, and doesn’t identify the affiliates? I don’t know. Neither does Google.

We were happy when the bag of remotes turned up; we’d already made the logical step to realizing that the various TV screens and media players (all without visible exterior controls) had to have some way of controlling things. We’d found a stack of instruction papers, and discovered that you can buy such things on Amazon (if you know the model number). Opening the cutlery drawer was just a positive step. We took the time to refresh the battery sets using a box of cheap AAAs that I’d purchased over the holidays.

And then we randomly pushed buttons, for far too long, before deciding that “without shore power, you will need to use the generator”. I’m not that far into the manual library, so I declined any other discovery efforts. I did manage to turn on the furnace (not on my list) and the time is now set on the dometics panel (which has a whole slew of “auto” things already programmed by the previous owner.)

Oh, and we discovered more menu screens on the big Android up front. Doesn’t look like my smartphone, but I did read somewhere that the OS was “familiar”. Not exactly.

Next step: go and visit someone that has (a) similar hardware and (b) shore power. Or at least familiarity. I am noobied out for today.

We attended the lobster festival this afternoon, where eating lobster rolls and voting for “the best of the batch” was the only activity on the schedule. I did see a fishing boat with a side thruster: that was cool!
