Travel tips
Today’s challenge: answer an email. One from a cousin, who has the vacation of a lifetime in view, and who wants to know more of the family origin story. Yes, the one where I have a great deal of information, but not enough to do justice to the question.
I have spent most of my life with the dream of knowing the place of origin of my ancestors. And with all the recent innovations in the field of family history, that should be easy. But, it is not. Not even close. I can point you to an area which can be circled on a tourist map. Then, It gets hazy. We are trying to look through the small end of a proverbial straw. With two hundred years of confusion plugging the tube.
You see, my ancestors were not rich. Or famous. They did the best they could but very few other people cared. At least, not enough to record the history. Or the origin story, if you will. And with each day that passes, the odds of every getting a conclusive answer lessen. Let’s go with “we think” and cut the losses.
The email also asked for tourism tips, about a place I have never visited. All I can offer is the common hints. Go see the Wild Atlantic Way. Wander along the bank of a river, or stand on the edge of a cliff. Do not fall in, or over. Enjoy the moment. Actually, the same advice I will give my own children, if they ask. I will not be checking out things before they go, so I can remain enigmatic.
