Go and fetch a pail of water
Unless they were particularly attentive during visits to museum sites, my children are unfamiliar with School Driving Fountain version One. That was the installation where you put your mouth just below a running faucet. Actually, my own generation had water from a faucet, most of the time. No need to head outside with a bucket and pump the ration for the morning in your classroom. My mother is from an earlier generation, and she would go to a local stream with a bucket and bring back several gallons of cold and clear. Different era.
Why this interests me, is that we depend on our deep wells with electric pumps. And we forget that if the lights go out, so does the water. We do live in the country. Unless you are extremely “prepper”, you don’t tend to keep drinking water around. Might be something to consider.
The construction of a simple water filter is simple. There, I said it. Just go on Amazon and find some filter units. Then, get a couple of well matched plastic pails and spend some time cutting holes of a proper size. With that, you too can go steam side for emergency water. Remember, if the trout can live in the stream, you might not die from the water. Fish flavour is free.
I haven’t constructed a home filter system, but I do think about it. At some point, the lights might go out, and if Genny does not answer, that might be your last cup of coffee for a bit. Do you want to go there? Same thing for tea, although I do not consider the two to be equal. And cold water if actually required for life as we know it. While you are stream side, keep in mind that fresh trout are really good, once you cook them.
