wake in the wake of the storm

posted in Uncategorized |

When day and night combines, and the cuckoo is your friend, it must mean that you’ve been awake too long. I blame it on the weather.

We knew the storm was coming, but when the generator fired up last evening, it was evident that the beast (Fiona) was close by. All relative; we were hours away from landfall, but the noise ceiling had masked the purr of the motor outside. So, what happens when a real storm comes to town? Nothing good.

I don’t know how windy things have been, as the weather station is down. Literally. On the ground. The railing around the deck is providing cover for the drip cone. The corner of the deck is now dangerous. Akin to the half-nest of wasps in the opposing corner.

We’re a few shingles short on the roof. OK, too many to count on my hands and toes, but they’re out there, on the lawn. The driveway is protected by a power line that is dangling. And elsewhere in our area, neighbours are learning that trees can go through the roof. All in all, a night’s work for a storm and a week’s worth of recovery for contractors in the area. It’s our first brush with serious windy, in seven years. Good luck can run out.

Actually, things could be much worse. We don’t suffer from surge (the storm variety), and the snowfall hasn’t happened. I can deal with reassembling my cheap railing and my expensive met gear. Someone else will fix the “hydro line”, hopefully before I run out of propane. No other weather moments on my horizon, so I will probably sleep well, tonight.
