That calm before the storm is real

posted in Uncategorized |

The mood here? I’ll go with “concerned anticipation”. We have a storm coming. If you believe the talking heads on TV, this could be one of the best/worst ever. So hard to separate the hyperbole, when they have time to fill and are getting wound up.

The reality? If this was winter, it would be interesting. How high can the drifts get? But on the first days of autumn, before the leave have changed? Guess work. We’ve done our part. Secured the objects that could go off to wander on the roads. Closed the windows. When I heard that someone in the area had covered their windows with plywood, I was left to imagine: where were they from? Had they lived through a tormado elsewhere? Were they feeling so unlucky in their lives that they invested in a truckload of “veneer”? We’ve done nothing so ostentatious.

Two days hence, we’ll do a final tally. Put away the storm chips (confession: we didn’t buy any). Look around at the treeline seeking new gaps. We did lose the top half of a pine tree, several years ago, but that was just Nature flexing muscles. This time around, I have no grandiose hopes. Forestry? Hardly.

And we have a brand new sump pump. Still “virgin”. If It saves me from carrying my little yellow pail filled with fresh water, I will consider it a reasonable purchase. Sure hate to discover an indoor pool, when my swimming clothes are already at the bottom of the dresser drawer.

Will I take photos? Of the wind and the rain? Would you? Better to paint word pictures.
