Where and when one eats

posted in Uncategorized |

Eating is a complex process. The where, and when and with whom can be as important as what. Consider posture; I still remember my first visit to a restaurant modeled on the Maghreb. Reclining on the floor, surrounded by cushions was distracting. Proof: at home I have a table, with chairs. Could have switched things out, but I didn’t.

I have little control over my meal companions. Tried the “maximum” approach while living in residence and dining in the campus cafeteria. Believe me, having several hundred companions, seated, elbow to elbow did not add to the flavours.  I now dine in duo, because the dog does not count as a conversation partner.

Lighting. Important. I can eat after dark, but not in the dark. Don’t want to guess about my plate contents. And since this week, we’re trying new strategies at supper, with the addition of a small light source that allows adjustment of colour temperature. It used to be that I disliked when restaurants lowered the house lights (at the same time that the menu did an odd price increase). At home, though, I had started to notice that I couldn’t see what was on my plate. Without reverting to a plate with compartments, we’re now testing if I can better discern the various elements of my menu. Still testing.

My olfactory senses are not keen enough to replace my deciling visual acuity. If you stop by, during mealtimes, please refrain from comments on how odd things seems.  And I will avoid making stew the only menu choice. Also, I don’t want to hit the table with a follow spot, so we’re going to take things one step at a time.

Meanwhile, the dog will retain his own dining area. Please note that he also sits for meals, rather than going for a full recline.
