ccidental or incidental

posted in Uncategorized |

As I age (gracefully), I’ve noticed that playing “Six Degrees” gets easier. Actually, I’ve moved beyond relationships, and I now allow incidents in my life to count.  But that is incidental to my cause.

This afternoon, a woman stopped by to use the phone. For real; her own personal device was elsewhere. And she wasn’t a complete stranger. Name recognition. Also, she will move into the neighboourhood when her lane becomes less of a bog. That snow which came last night and is gone today hinders any getting the car down to the bottom of that field. Now, where was I?

Oh, right. I recognized the name, and asked if her husband was a brother to someone else who used to play tuba. In my circle. Actually, he family had three brothers, all tubaists. That also is incidental. A long time ago, I donated my small holding of tuba sheet music to an incoming student on campus. Her brother-in-law, as it turns out. I don’t know if he still plays. That is one more incidental. Or accidental. We are tying this to musical performances.

The sheet music had become incidental to me. Too many accidentals. The major part of the collection was “studies”, which are a synonym for accidentals tied together. Believe me, “studies” are a study in material devod of melody. Probably why I had handed them along to the next (victim). And now, the whole incident is just something to provoke my sense of wonder at how random things can be. Accidental. If the snow hadn’t fallen, the woman might have made it down the lane to her new house.
