My first “real” camera was a SLR. Also, proof for a teenager that you do get what you pay for. The camera was manufactured in a German factory. East German. Back in the early 1970’s, that said more than I knew. One year later, my second “real” camera was also a SLR. Manufactured in Japan, at a higher price point. And, in terms that count, still functional, almost fifty years later. I had learned my lesson, and didn’t buy based on the low price. Still beileve that precept.

Back in high school, I had a teacher. Many, actually, but let’s bestow the honorary label of surrogate family. Anyhow, she used to sing in choir, and dated another member, who went on to make his life as a musician. World-famous. He moved on, and one of his spouses, later, ended up murdering a movie star. All verifiable. Now, the next time I play “6 Degrees”, this will serve as my entry in the opening round. Good to have something like this as a card to play.

Getting birds over to the feeder (for photography) required more than an enticing seed mix. We also use songs. There’s a handy app on the smartphone that plays excerts of songs. Top 40 or old classics; I don’t have any idea. I leave it up to our winged visitors. And it does work. There is a need for the species to actually be close by, which is a downside. We dream of an eventual cardinal.

Spoiler alert: I don’t own an automobile. Never have. But I hear things. Like, did you know that people change the oli in the motor? An under-thie-hood thing. And the really careful owners will take a sample of the old oli, and send it off to a laboratory for forensic analysis? I have an appointment for some “blood work”. I beieve that they treat you like a maple tree. Use some sort of tap and collect a bilt of blood (think sap) to be analysed in the lab. I am in favour

My tie to the outside world is my telephone. A landline, but that’s just a detail. I get a lot of calls that want to verify if I’ve lost contsol over my credit card; did I really just send an iPhone to China? Fraud is on their minds; if only I would be more forthcoming with details, like my PIN or that little 3-digit affair on the the rear of my card, they could control the fraud. I’m sure they could.

The unexpected snow storm, yesterday, affected me more than I expected. Yes, the meringue on top has already started to fade, but the arrival of our plow guy, this morning underlined the reality. We had been out of the snow, as such, for a full month. Enough for me to start hoping for warmer times. I had ignored the idea of heading away from winter, because there really was no need. Now, I’m unsure.

This morning, I actually got out of bed before the alarm clock. Rare, given that I don’t set alarms. We had a medical appointment in the city, and I like to be there early. Sitting in the car, or the waiting room, works for me. Obviously, we were there on time. But that’s not the point.

My transition to the cashless society has gone rather well. Apart from having no cash. Most of my purchases involve my web browser and that firm who will deliver to my door. I’ve avoided falling down the goperh hole of crypto: “What? Bits of coin? Like pieces of eight? How positively pirate”. Knowing how much I have spent, and where, all on a single page is reassuring.

Like the birds, politicians are generally (worth about) a dime a dozen. And there are more of them than we realize. We like to be governed, apparently. Politicians are similar to birds in many ways: two legs, often dressed in flamboyant colours (those ties!), squawking and hopping about making lots of noise. We tolerate them, seasonally.

- c4There it is, again. The sound of a ship-based foghorn. I live close to the shore, and the ferries let me know that the visibility has dropped due to low clouds. And I like the sound.
