A picnic!

I don’t actually follow the solar calendar. But, today is the solstice, and that’s probably why I found myself sitting in the shadow of a small lighthouse, looking out over the harbor and enjoying a take-away supper. A picnic, if you will. The local restaurants (diminishing in number) aren’t doing table service just yet, and so our menu choices were ordered by phone and delivered in a brown bag out the back door. How do you rate that service on Yelp, I wonder?

Ready for a new semester

In this era of shopping online, the absence of a tracking number means that the delivery is unexpected. Like this afternoon, when I heard the van door slam on another of the anonymous fleet that services this territory (on behalf of Purolator). A box, with my name on the label.

Changes in my world

Open the door, focus, get my fill of evening hare. It wasn’t at all perturbed by my efforts.

New tools in the package: a plus

You know what qualifies as “fun”, on a hot afternoon? Learning that some of your hardware can do new things, not mentioned in the owner’s guide. Today, while seeking something unrelated on a website, I learned that one of the DSLR cameras in the house is able to carry on intelligent communications with the iPad. Think of this as a feature that didn’t make it in to the final edit. And even better, the utility software came at no extra charge. That counts for something, in our economy. My only regret is that MY camera doesn’t have this capability, but to be fair, I probably wouldn’t rely on it for the kind of photography I practice nowadays (very much random, point and shoot stuff.) After all, isn’t it my goal to fix things in post-process, whenever possible?

We serve as the local critter kitchen

As I watch through the living room window, she who normally watches the birds is busy; trying to feed a chipmunk from a small handful of almonds. It’s not going well. I guess the striped marauder has no experience with almonds, so why try something new. In a sense, I’m glad, because the price of roasted almonds far exceeds the fun of watching a rodent stuff the cheeks and scurry off to wherever nuts and seeds are stored.

Privatize the lot of them

There’s an odd rivalry between the rail companies and the pipeline companies, here in Canada. Both will tell you, loudly, that we need crude oil “transported”. And both will ignore the two realities; the need for crude oil transportation is lessening, and they’re both not very good at it. Think about this.

Tired of my kink collection

Another day; another rant. This time around, I want to mention that certain garden hoses are meant to be displayed by the retailer, and nothing else. If it takes longer to dekink and get water to flow from end to end than the actual time I need for water… you get the drift.

Sweet water on demand

Note to self: the next time we decide to surround the house with sugar-water dispensers (the hummingbirds get first dibs on sweets, here), try to find a feeder that is easy to fill. Right now, we have four disparate models. I’d like to move to one, multiplied by our largesse to the hover community. Seems like a plan, to me. Something tells me that teacups would do the job; no need for pretend flowers.

Ice cream, now in the neighbourhood

Day two, and my water tank refresh is complete. There is something really satisfying when the nose detects the change from antifreeze to bleach (proof that I probably don’t have “the COVID”, based on known symptoms). There is still the “fill the tank, again” step. It can wait.

Water improvement

It may have required a half century, but some of the skills I picked up in high school now make sense. This afternoon, I decided to sanitize the fresh water tank on the RV, because… well… it seems like the right thing to do. I didn’t get many hours of classroom time in biology, particularly water purification. Hey, that’s why we now have Google; to lower the deaths due to bad drinking water. Anyhow.
