All that sunshine must be good for something

One mustn’t get distracted by all this nice weather: the province has just set a new record, with fourteen days out of thirty showing temperatures above 20C. In June, we expect warmer weather, but there are limits. Tie that into very low precipitation levels, and one group is vexed… the farmers depend on a combination of wind, rain and sunshine (OK, less the wind) to get the crops started. Before the really warm days of July, etc. This year, unless things change, expect shorter fries with your burger.

Protect me from the anti-vax movement

Right now, I miss the distraction of the workplace. With lots of time on my hands, and a deep-seated curiosity, I find myself reading lots of things, about lots of subjects. And I realize that there are many, many people with access to keyboards who come without a lick of sense, as my grandmother used to say.

Uncertain times to be a traveler

Here we are, late in the afternoon on the final weekend in June. Only because FB brought it to my attention, I realized that the amateur radio community on this continent is starting to clean up from another Field Day exercise. This is one of those events where I should have got involved; I have the time, the field, the equipment and the knowledge. Trapped in my bubble, I haven’t even plugged in the radio. Next year.

Deck starlings?

Here’s a question that doesn’t require an answer: what did lazy folks do before frozen pizza? I’m not inspired to prepare anything more ambitious. Besides, I haven’t had any pepperoni in ages. Don’t care about the low nutritional value. Don’t care about the ambient temperature here in the house. By the time things get up to the “molten cheese” point, darkness will be upon us, and I’m ready to sit back with some classic radio and a tall glass of apple juice. Rockin’ life, my way.

Another dog in our bubble

The phrase “it takes a community” is being tested, here, this evening. Suddenly, the number of dogs has doubled, and all I have to distract is a bag of liver treats. They don’t show an interest in quiet conversation, so my role is simplified; I hand out things that I wouldn’t eat, even on a bet, and they respond by wagging their tails. Almost wrote “tales”, but they haven’t told me any, yet.

Number shame

I really wish that our dog could talk.

Not in that shouty voice that he uses with the garbage truck and delivery vans and our car and the wandering fox. I want conversation.

Dazed and confused

Not simply a reference to a Led Zeppelin air, I guess. Caught a news clip from a legislative hearing somewhere in the sunny south: did you know that wearing a surgical mask is an affront to the “beautiful breathing created by god”? Me neither. Picture a pack of fools, convened by a pack of lies.

Mad budget skills

There are a lot of unhappy people out there. In a moment of reckless abandon, I checked a suggested stream of misery on Twitter, by following the @crazykarens tag. Wow! Give these folks a shovel, and they’d find the long way to the antipodes. Meanwhile, everyone else along the way would get a taste of their venom. Too much, on such a lovely day.

Another round of tracking begins

NO more jokes from here about “slow boats from China”. Today, I briefly held a parcel that was received by Canada Post on the 15th of May past. With an expected travel time of just under a week, you can see that something went wrong.

A second picnic, if you are keeping track

Summer makes it easy to throw a whole winter of good habits out the window. Food: where you can get in the car and find a food truck, or a canteen, or a restaurant with a window that sells take-away food. Not to be confused with tonight’s destination that advertised food to “sortir”. Dictionaries don’t always provide the “mot juste”, just saying.
