A non-standard version of a standard

posted in computing |

Standards are just ideas, in the part of the software world I frequent. I have/had a wonderful little app for displaying my GEDCOM that suddenly stopped working. This was a transfer mechanism, to get data from the PC onto iOS, and my PC version hasn’t changed in close to two decades. I imported the file into another PC program, exported the file back out (in what is called a “standard”) and was able to import back into iOS without a hiccup. On the developer’s site, no mention of anything changed, so I’m going to go with “no explanation available”. And carry on.

Another of those stars that has been around for most of my life in front of the TV passed today. Mary Tyler Moore. You were appreciated, and you will be missed.

The bill for the wall has been signed. Take note that we have no idea who will foot the bill for this bill. But the wall will be “huge”; both in size and cost, if it actually gets erected. Not exactly the Great Wall of those other people (China), but sure to be compared. After all, when the boss only uses the superlative section of his (rather limited) thesaurus, we can predict the tone. And since he hasn’t learned about the propensity of the people who live on the far side of his new wall to “tunnel”, life should be interesting.

I’ve just learned that selfie sticks are not allowed down in Disneyland. What do they know that the rest of us should learn?
