A stormy day in retail paradise

posted in economy, humour |

Time to give special mention to “our” UPS driver. In a world where deliveries are all across the scale, in terms of quality, this fellow stands out. He delivers to the door; no searching around the deck or the shrub cover for an errant parcel. He is super polite about things, and he goes out of the way for the dog. Not “out of the way”; rather, he gets the dog to sit and shake paw, and then he digs into a side holster of biscuits and seals his pact with food. Our dog believes!

Mind you, the delivery is the end of a long process. I’ve tracked parcels the length and breadth of the continent. Doesn’t change delivery time, but it makes me feel as if something is happening. Not always easy. Today, I received a package that was initially ordered on April 30th, supposedly in stock. Amazon fell short of their own hype on this one, and it can’t be blamed on wildfires or floods or deadly winds. This was just an normal situation gone awry. Will it stop me from ordering in future? No. And the online retailers know that. Out here, away from a world of oversize parking lots and sidewalks, I’m a captive to their cause.

So, what did I get? A screen shield for my tablet device. Didn’t weigh much more than a small bag of mints. I guess I’ll never know what really happened, behind the secretive walls of the web-based retailer. Probably a good thing; keeps me believing that this was just a stormy day in retail paradise.
