Consider Atlantis
Coming up on the nine-month anniversary of my move from La Vieille Capitale. Almost long enough to forget the annual flood crisis… I lived well above the high water mark, but media attention does mark the mind. A photo from the national news, today, reminded me that rivers and ice mix poorly; the town of Beauceville is, again, learning how water goes where you want it least.
The photo shows a bridge, and just upstream, another structure that looks like a “bridge to nowhere”, ending in the middle of an icy soup. Had to get into Google Earth to realize that it does go somewhere: a park on an island in the “middle of the stream”. Right now, consider Atlantis. In a few days, the debacle will break, and life will return to normal. For another year.
This week, our Idol watch took us from auditions to competition. Fierce competition. Probably the best field in more than a decade, if the talent level is a barometer. Today there are ten, but in six short weeks, only one will remain. This is (apparently) the final season, so I want to mention that Top Ten by name. Again, as a barometer.

Do the math. 6:4 as a F/M ratio. Average age: 19 and a range from 15 to 24. Hair? One that has enough for all the others. One parent. No veterans of the foreign wars (is that even statistically important?)
As I mentioned, in six weeks, only one will remain. The others will be fading, quickly, from the national memory. (Even the winner, statistically, but this is a talented gang.)
