Listening and babbling

posted in education |

There’s so much content available on the Internet; pity that I can’t do a start over on my odometer. Can’t work through even a spoonful of the potential without making a Faustian bargain for more time. I’m not the first to complain about the constraints of having “but one life to live”, I’ll bet.

As I pursue my language program (ninety days and counting on Duolingo),  I’m ready to take on the world. At least, if subtitles are available. Learning a new language is not a short term effort; I know this, after spending better than four decades to get beyond embarrassment with my second language. And my Latin? Put that one on the dead shelf, shall we?

Just finished watching four episodes of EIPIC on the web, and there’s a satisfaction that comes from matching what I hear to what the text on the screen hints I should be hearing. Cool! Not going to be breaking into conversations any time soon (as if that was even possible, here), but babies spend a lot of time listening and babbling before getting a place at the podium, right? I’m taking my baby steps, and it reaffirms the time I’ve invested, so far. Must keep on…

Remember, when I started on a course of intensive learning, last time around, the only tool available was a tiny dictionary in my jacket pocket. Hard to appear spontaneous in a gabfest while flipping through the pages; that only covers the “what I’m trying to say” and does a poor job of assisting comprehension. This time around, I’m coming in with a lot more life-baggage.
