Phone home? Nay!
For the last twenty-four hours, I’ve had an unexpected PND. Let’s hope that tomorrow is a better day. Otherwise: no, I don’t have a long range plan for this one.
At what point does a piece of technology stop being “owned” by the company behind the firmware/software. An enigma, given the latest practices of some very large firms. The “something other than owners” of certain smartphones have learned that getting a repair done at other than the Mothership can lead to sudden catastrophic failure… software induced. The decision to disable devices with third-party repairs to what seems to be hardware has left a lot of people perplexed. And contemplating class-action lawsuits.
What about the predominant operating system, which “exists” in a number of versions (yes, I know; numbered versions). The firm behind the logo (or the Start button, if you prefer) has decided that nobody will be left behind. Mandatory updates to the new version. Now, I have been practicing active avoidance on this one, for a number of reasons (unnumbered versions). I like what I have. The configuration works. I don’t want to be dragged into something new, particularly when there are some obvious philosophical conflicts. In short, I don’t want to “phone home”, hundreds, nay thousands of times each day. Not that much news around here. I may have to clone my main drive, soon, just to have a roll-back position.
If only computers were like clothes, where old fashions come around again. I wonder if my trusty Kaypro can learn some new tricks.
