Out for a wander

posted in sports |

I love when new equipment marries with traditional technique, and life goes on. The weather this afternoon, flawless, reminded us that we had purchased newfangled snowshoes at another point in our lives, and that mine were still sealed in the original packaging, with the original tags. No more excuses accepted.

It took a few minutes to get ready. The phone rang, and then I had to choose appropriate togs (it is winter, after all). And the racquets had to be sized to my boots. After what seemed like “too long”, we headed out the door and buckled up. Today, a basic sortie. Close to home, which means straight down the hill to the wooded section. With the dog…

Trying to lead an energetic hound while wearing snowshoes is a futile exercise. We simply accepted the inevitable, and let him go. With trepidation. He’s not used to being outside and off the lead. Based on this photo, you can (perhaps) detect a little dog-joy.

With the energy expended, I had this mental image of carrying a sleeping dog back home, but he held up through the whole exercise.

The new equipment is actually an upgrade from my old-style shoes, and things like turns and reversals are much easier. We had sufficient snow on the ground that we needed the gear.

After a tour through the trees, we arrived at the edge of our lake (a lagoon), and I was surprised to learn that there were large stretches of open water.

And to prove we didn’t use levitation, or mechanical assistance to get from here to there and back again, a shot of the traces we left in the snow.
