this was a health care run
Today, a complete change in “procedure” for our household. Over the last thirty years, I’ve grown accustomed to riding shotgun, as we used to say back in high school. The passenger seat was mine, at any time the owner of the car was present. In real terms, I’ve had the liberty of running errands, playing taxi man for our progeny, even parking the car on occasion… as long as she was elsewhere.
Today, I took on a new role, driving down AND back to the town to the south of here (which remains nameless). Highway, baby! You see, this was a health care run. Not exactly how I had planned my day.
The local hospital is that, in name. What with the complete absence of doctors, it serves as a way station for ambulance transfers, and we did go there for flu shots. Not enough when the pain level hits “9 out of 10”. We needed to speak with someone in authority; a trained professional. Someone with access to “the system”, including quick bloodwork and a mobile ultrasound unit (yes, the same blue goo is still applied, with the same warning that “this will feel cold”.) The whole diagnosis process didn’t take very long; a blessing for the dog who was busy minding the parked car.)
Our consultations with people who have actual degrees is not over, but we’re home, for now. I will keep my new hat close at hand, less we slip back into the old way of doing things. And if it means driving in the rain, I can do that, too.
