Just in case they don’t win; a practice session
So, which one of the fans got a little excited this time? In a world where basic city police techniques are taught by the cast of The Simpsons, does it really matter? Last night there was a hockey game. Last night the hometown team won. Last night there was no system of functional law in place in downtown Montreal. Are we clear on all the facts here?
Now, I wasn’t there. My version of the story comes from the reports garnered on various media sites. It would seem that a few people (few is such a cover your bases term) were really happy that “their” team had won and would advance to the next competitive round. At that point, all credibility is lost.
Sixteen police cars torched! Stores looted (sneakers and whiskey go so well together)! The police chief is considering closing the main street in one of Canada’s largest cities “for the next time”. Let’s see, there are several hundred rowdies out there, so we’ll shut downtown to the other two million.
Two quotes from those in charge stand out. The police say “It could have been worse” and the official oppositions says “the police should fight back”. Well, right on both fronts then, because if the police have to fight back then things ARE worse. I’m a believer.
Why do I keep thinking that Chief Wiggum is behind this whole episode? Here are some sample quotes. To be fair, this probably wasn’t a riot. These probably weren’t real fans, as anyone that can afford seats at the big game already has the cash to buy some sneakers and whiskey. As for the torched police cars, I have no idea. Sixteen of ’em. Maybe somebody owns a car dealership and has a great bargain on replacement Crown Vics.
My sons had mentioned that Montreal might get a bit third world if the Habs won the Cup. Guess the fans are just practicing for the big night.
